Masimo jailbroke iPhones to try to keep the Apple Watch banned.

That’s according to the US Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) recently-published January 12th ruling that approved Apple’s modification meant to lift the Apple Watch ban.

CBP chief Dax Terrill wrote that Masimo installed “otherwise restricted software that, but for the jailbreaking, would not have been feasible.” He concluded that the software change “would appear to resolve the issue of infringement.”

Slack gives the gift of GIF selection.

Slack has started rolling out a GIF picker that uses the Tenor search engine owned by Google.

This is a true blessing for anyone who has never fully trusted that they wouldn’t send their dumb search term, rather than the GIF itself, when using the “/giphy” command.

Animated GIF of Slacks animated GIF searching feature.
Imagine it, a built-in GIF search!

Checking in on the Rabbit R1’s note-taking prowess.

This quick demo from Rabbit CEO Jesse Lyu certainly helps make the case for the Rabbit R1 as a little AI helper gadget as it records audio and transcribes and summarizes it for you.

Yes, there are already smartphones with on-device AI capabilities like this. But look at the little reel-to-reel animation! So charming!

Is your car snitching on your driving habits?

A driver’s insurance rate went up based on a 130-page report detailing his Chevy Bolt’s drives over six months, shared by GM with data broker LexisNexis through the OnStar Smart Driver program, reports The New York Times.

According to the Times, Kia, Subaru, and Mitsubishi also contribute to the LexisNexis data portal, while another company, Verisk partners with Ford, Honda, and Hyundai. Subaru says it only shares odometer data when authorized, while Ford says it will share data for usage-based programs based on a customer’s in-car menu confirmation.

Update March 12th, 2024, 2:42PM ET: Added details on the partnerships and what data is shared.

Boeing’s door plug incident is under criminal investigation.

The US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) investigation will consider whether Boeing complied with its 2021 settlement with the DOJ in light of an Alaska Boeing 737 Max that recently lost a chunk of fuselage mid-flight, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Alaska Airlines reportedly called such investigations “normal.” In February, an investigation revealed that four bolts were missing from the door plug when it left Boeing’s factory.

A Cybertruck owner shopped around and found out.

Tesla’s owner agreement expressly forbids owners to “sell or otherwise attempt to sell” the truck within a year of buying it, or the company would take action, including refusing future sales.

Well, someone in the Cybertruck Owners Club forum says they tried listing theirs “on multiple sites to feel it out” anyway, and the company canceled their two (2!) other reservations.

Be careful selling your Cybertruck! Tesla found sale listings...

Reddit seeks $6.5 billion valuation in IPO.

The company hopes to raise up to $748 million when it goes public by selling about 22 million shares at $31 to $34 per share, according to a public filing issued Monday after Bloomberg first reported the number.

Part of its plan will rest on its own users and moderators, for whom the company will set aside 1.76 million shares. Reddit’s valuation would be down from the $10 billion it hoped for when it first filed to go public in 2021.

Update March 11th, 6:41AM ET: Added official filing.

Three authors accuse Nvidia of using their books for AI training without permission.

The authors, Brian Keene, Abdi Nazemian, and Steward O’Nan, allege that Nvidia trained natural language aspects of its NeMo platform on a massive training dataset containing their work, according to Reuters. Their class-action suit, if certified, would cover anyone in the US with work involved in NeMo’s training.

Although Reuters doesn’t specify, the suit may be referencing the “Books3” dataset that other author lawsuits against OpenAI and Meta are based on.

Stratolaunch, still in the game, pulls off a powered hypersonic test flight.

This is the first successful powered flight of its reusable Talon-A TA-1 autonomous hypersonic plane, which it announced yesterday “reached high supersonic speeds approaching Mach 5” during the test.

The TA-1 launched from Roc, its massive twin-fuselage plane that recently flew with the TA-1, attached and fully-fueled for the first time. Eventually, the company hopes to launch space planes from the 385-foot-wide flier.
