One billion, six hundred and seventy-five million US dollars.

That’s the record civil penalty diesel engine maker Cummins would pay in a proposed settlement after US and California regulators alleged that “nearly a million” Cummins-equipped 2013 – 2023 RAM pickup trucks used software to cheat on emissions testing and were excessively pollutive in real-world driving.

The company also has to spend over $325 million to offset excess NOx emissions, including by paying to replace 27 out-of-date diesel locomotives across the country.

X says charges were dropped against a student who posted about free food.

X’s news account claimed responsibility for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne having “rescinded its disciplinary action against Juan David Campolargo,” a student who had gotten in trouble for an account that pointed to events on campus that had free food available.

The low-stakes case was the first apparent instance of the site defending a user in trouble for their posts. The Verge has reached out to the university for confirmation.

Here are all the Wi-Fi 7 routers announced at CES this year.

There weren’t many, but most big names announced theirs last year.

New to buy are Ubiquiti’s UniFi U7 Pro PoE+ access point and several of TP-Link’s new (and some not so new) routers. Coming later are MSI’s Roamii mesh and Acer’s new 5G and mesh gaming routers. And that’s about it for CES 2024 routers. Read our Wi-Fi 7 guide before you buy one.

The Castro podcast app is back up.

The app stopped functioning last week and its website had become inaccessible, but the company issued a fix on Monday. Tiny representative Aditya Ponugonti told The Verge via email that the app and website outage were related to a DNS issue, and that “we aren’t shutting down Castro.”

Ponugonti added that the company is “still working towards finding a new home” for the app.

One of the world’s top Kim Kardashian: Hollywood players is upset at the game’s cancellation.

I feel for Peppur Triplett, who told Business Insider she turned to the game as a COVID escape. She spent 10 years overall amassing her fortune and becoming the #11 player of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. And it shuts down in April.

The accessorizing fame game may not be my first choice, but I hate to see someone lose their favorite game. Free-to-play breaks everyone’s heart, eventually.

It’s official: The Peregrine Moon lander won’t make its landing.

Its maker, Astrobotic, said in an update today that it’s lost too much propellant to make it to the Moon because of a malfunction with its propulsion system that occurred after it separated from its launch vehicle.

The company says it can still operate the craft and will gather data for its next attempt with its Griffin lander.
