How OpenAI’s Anna Makanju made Sam Altman the face of AI.

Here’s a deep dive, published by The Washington Post, into the ChatGPT company’s liaison to global leaders, and her role in turning CEO Sam Altman “into the AI industry’s ambassador.”

The article says Makanju’s coaching helped ingratiate Altman to US lawmakers. As the Post writes, the strategy “could also backfire” if things go sideways with AI and he becomes the focus of lawmakers’ ire.

Sony’s CES presentation is due at 8PM ET.

Sony may again not be showing any TVs at CES this year, but it’s still going to take the stage to talk about “technologies and initiatives that support creators.” Last year, the company showed off an electric car called the Afeela, which had a built-in PS5 and a screen on the front.

The company has been tight-lipped about what it might show tonight. My money’s on a PS5 with a built-in car.

The first private US mission to the Moon is leaking fuel.

Today’s successful launch of the NASA-funded Astrobotic’s Peregrine lander might have made it the US’ first lunar touchdown since 1972. But an “anomaly” kept Peregrine from properly orienting after separating from the launcher, reported The New York Times.

“The team developed and executed an improvised maneuver to reorient toward the Sun,” the company stated in a post, before admitting a propulsion system failure may put the Moon out of reach.

Duolingo laid off 10 percent of its contractors because of AI.

Bloomberg reports that a spokesperson for the language learning app said Duolingo doesn’t as many people anymore to perform the contractors’ work, adding that “part of that could be attributed to AI.”

The spokesperson also said AI isn’t a “straight replacement” because workers are already using AI to help them work. Duolingo has long used AI, having incorporated chatbots in 2016 and OpenAI’s Chat GPT-4 early last year.

Airlines will have to fix their Boeing 737 Max 9 planes if they find defects, says the FAA.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a statement about the emergency airworthiness directive it sent to airlines today following what the directive termed a ‘rapid decompression’ of an Alaska Airlines flight on Friday.

Operators like Alaska will have to inspect “both left and right cabin door exit plugs, door components, and fasteners” and correct any problems they find before the planes can fly again (subject to FAA approval).
