Summer game fest playstation xbox gaming events 2026 – Breaking News & Latest Updates 2026
Skip to main content

Get ready for some gaming news. It’s officially June, which means splashy new events from PlayStation, Xbox, and gaming hype man Geoff Keighley. But this season doesn’t just feature the big tentpole shows; there will be a bunch of smaller events, too, and they might feature some promising games as well.

But this year’s events are taking place at a difficult time for the industry. The prices of consoles and gaming hardware have skyrocketed, with all of the three major console players announcing price hikes and PC handheld makers jacking up hardware costs as well.

Game companies also have to work around the looming giant that is Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to launch on November 19th. That time of year is usually a very busy one as studios launch their games to get ahead of the holiday shopping season, but we could see some of the industry’s biggest games give GTA VI a wide berth.

We’ll be tracking the biggest news of the June gaming events season right here.

For Sony’s PlayStation State of Play, you can check every major update right here.

  • Crystal Dynamics used “AI-assisted tools” while developing the Tomb Raider reboot.

According to the Steam page for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis:

AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content. Any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team.

Crystal Dynamics tells Eurogamer that “we leverage AI tools to help our teams iterate on ideas faster and more efficiently, while ensuring that all finished content in the final product is human-crafted.”

PlayStation used its most recent State of Play showcase to make it clear where its focus is. After a series of costly live-service stumbles, it’s getting back to focusing on premium, narrative-driven, single-player games. That statement was made clear with how it started and ended the hourlong show.

The showcase began with an extended look at gameplay from Marvel’s Wolverine, the new superhero title from Insomniac Games. Over seven minutes of bloody action, Logan sliced and diced his way through a bunch of baddies as he tried to rescue some captured mutants, briefly teaming up with Jean Grey for some help taking them down. Insomniac is well-known for its excellent single-player adventures, like Ratchet & Clank and the recent Spider-Man games, and Wolverine seems poised to keep up the tradition when it launches in September.

Sony ended its big State of Play showcase with a major reveal: the next God of War. The new title is called God of War Laufey, and is once again developed by Sony’s Santa Monica Studio. Currently, the game doesn’t have a date, but it’s coming to the PS5 whenever it does launch.

This time, instead of perpetually furious dad Kratos, players will take control of Faye / Laufey, as the title implies. That means that while the tone of the game seems somewhat similar to past God of War titles, the gameplay looks quite different, with much more aerobatic action punctuated by magic instead of Kratos’ heavy violence. Also, there’s a giant, six-legged cat that can fly. And a talking gelatinous cube named Phranque that fights alongside you.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was scheduled to launch in 2026, but during Tuesday’s State of Play show, it got a release date of February 12th, 2027. Like Fable, seems it’s steering clear of Grand Theft Auto VI.

Dressed in the iconic yellow Wolverine outfit, Logan slunk around and stabbed his way through a bunch of enemies, using his blades to take them out. Combat looked weighty and satisfying — though the game is extremely bloody, with red flying everywhere as Logan fought his opponents.

Wolverine has been a long time coming, with Sony and Insomniac initially announcing the game all the way back in 2021. At the time, details were scarce. But Sony finally showed off some gameplay in a separate State of Play in September 2025 and revealed the official release date in February.

It’s early June, which means it’s video game event season once again. Now that E3 has been gone for a few years, a bunch of showcases and presentations have started to fill the void, including big productions like Summer Game Fest Live and smaller affairs like Wholesome Games Direct.

If you love following gaming news, it’s a good time of year. There will be a lot to take in that will set the stage for the rest of the year’s gaming releases. But without a big centralized conference like E3, it can be difficult to keep track of the many different events that will be happening over the next several days.

    Things are bad out there.

Despite 2026 shaping up to be a great year when it comes to actual games, it couldn’t really be worse for the people that make them or the industry as a whole. Hardware prices keep going up, layoffs have shown no signs of stopping, and even big-budget titles backed by large corporations can feel precarious.
