OpenAI

OpenAI kicked off an AI revolution with DALL-E and ChatGPT, making the organization the epicenter of the artificial intelligence boom. Led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI became a story unto itself when Altman was briefly fired and then brought back after pressure from staff and Microsoft, an investor and close partner.

OpenAI apparently hasn’t actually received Elon Musk’s acquisition offer.

Elon Musk offered to buy OpenAI for $97.4 billion on Monday, but according to Wired:

[Sam] Altman has also told employees that OpenAI’s board, which he sits on, has yet to receive an official offer from Musk and the other investors. If and when this happens, the board plans to reject the bid, according to those same sources. Internally, OpenAI employees reacted to the news with a mixture of fear and exasperation.

GPT-5o will probably just be called GPT-5.

That’s just one of the updates OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed during a Reddit AMA, saying that the launch of the next-gen model doesn’t “have a timeline yet.” Altman also hinted at updates to advanced voice mode, as well as the full release of its o3 reasoning model in “more than a few weeks, less than a few months.”

It could be one of the biggest private computing infrastructure projects in history — or a disaster.

OpenAI targets a $340 billion valuation.

The ChatGPT-maker is reportedly looking to raise up to $40 billion in funding at a $340 billion valuation. SoftBank would lead the round and invest up to $25 billion.

SoftBank also announced last week it would be investing in a $500 billion datacenter project with OpenAI called Stargate. Its been reported that OpenAI and SoftBank will each invest $19 billion in that project. SoftBank tends to fund with debt — it already carries $150 billion on its books.

OpenAI is putting its o1 models on Los Alamos Lab’s supercomputer.

After announcing a partnership with OpenAI last year, the US National Laboratory will now install the company’s latest reasoning models on its Nvidia-powered Venado supercomputer “to conduct national security research.”

OpenAI says it will also support the Lab’s nuclear security program, “focused on reducing the risk of nuclear war and securing nuclear materials and weapons worldwide:”

We anticipate that this engagement will lead to broader safety collaborations across a variety of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks... we look forward to developing future projects together to support the U.S. government and the mission of ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity.

As headlines abound about the fractured relationship between OpenAI and its biggest business partner, Microsoft, Sam Altman opts for a selfie with Satya Nadella.

Nadella has made a few jabs in OpenAI’s direction — “I’m good for my $80 billion” when asked about Stargate and a quip about AI hype in response to Elon Musk — but all is well, right? I mean... look how happy they look.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on DeepSeek R1: “an impressive model.”

The ChatGPT boss says of his company, “we will obviously deliver much better models and also it’s legit invigorating to have a new competitor,” then, naturally, turns the conversation to AGI.

Screenshot of tweets by Sam Altman reading “deepseek’s r1 is an impressive model, particularly around what they’re able to deliver for the price. we will obviously deliver much better models and also it’s legit invigorating to have a new competitor! we will pull up some releases. but mostly we are excited to continue to execute on our research roadmap and believe more compute is more important now than ever before to succeed at our mission. the world is going to want to use a LOT of ai...’

Satya Nadella on Elon’s Stargate accusations: “All I know is I’m good for my $80 billion.”

In a CNBC interview this morning, Microsoft’s CEO avoided the accusations that OpenAI and Softbank don’t have the money to support their AI infrastructure dreams.

Nadella said he’s “not in the details” of investments in The Stargate Project, confirming only the $80 billion Microsoft will invest annually in building up Azure to handle AI.
