OpenAI

OpenAI kicked off an AI revolution with DALL-E and ChatGPT, making the organization the epicenter of the artificial intelligence boom. Led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI became a story unto itself when Altman was briefly fired and then brought back after pressure from staff and Microsoft, an investor and close partner.

CBS News reports OpenAI, Oracle, and Softbank will announce a ‘Stargate’ AI data center project.

It’s reportedly part of “billions of dollars in private sector investment to build artificial intelligence infrastructure” that Donald Trump is preparing to announce, with the first project in Texas. Oddly, earlier rumors about “Stargate” included Microsoft and this one doesn’t so far, but their connection with OpenAI has grown more complicated since then.

Executives from the companies are expected to say they plan to commit $100 billion initially and pour up to $500 billion into Stargate over the next four years.

OpenAI adds BlackRock executive to its board.

OpenAI has appointed Adebayo “Bayo” Ogunlesi to its board of directors. Ogunlesi is chairman and CEO of Global Infrastructure Partners (an investment fund) and a senior managing director at BlackRock.

The appointment of Ogunlesi comes as the AI company weighs a shift from nonprofit to for-profit status. OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor hinted at his expertise here:

“Bayo has an exceptional track record of driving success in organizations with global reach, expertly navigating complex and dynamic commercial landscapes.”

US antitrust officials back an argument in Elon Musk’s legal battle against Sam Altman.

The Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department didn’t take a position on the appropriate outcome, but write in a statement of interest that holding a seat on two competing boards can violate antitrust law — even if the board member foregoes one. At issue is Reid Hoffman’s simultaneous participation on the OpenAI and Microsoft boards.

Suffering from Success (and negative Cash Money).

OpenAI’s pricey $200 ChatGPT Pro plan is losing the company money, but not because people don’t want to pay it — according to CEO Sam Altman, subscribers are simply getting more than their money’s worth.

“I personally chose the price and thought we would make some money,” he said on X.

OpenAI, Microsoft, and the $100 billion AGI question

One important detail in this report about Microsoft and OpenAI’s exclusive cloud arrangement is that last year’s extension apparently defines the often-disputed term artificial general intelligence (AGI).

While reaching AGI could let OpenAI end the deal, the report says that it’s defined as returning $100 billion or so in profits — a tall task for a company “with no path toward profitability in sight.”

“So far, the vibes are off.”

We reported in October that OpenAI could launch its GPT-4 successor, codenamed Orion, this month. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports the behind-schedule model’s training is a struggle that’s racking up “enormous” costs.

When it will be ready is apparently a feel thing. WSJ writes:

It’s up to company executives to decide whether the model is smart enough to be called GPT-5 based in large part on gut feelings or, as many technologists say, “vibes.”

So far, the vibes are off.

Elon Musk is “clearly a bully” says Sam Altman.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman went on a Bari Weiss podcast recently and spoke about his ongoing feud with Elon Musk:

I don’t live inside Elon’s head, so this is a little bit of a speculation. Elon definitely did a lot to help OpenAI in the early days, and in spite of all this, I’m very grateful. And I think he’s just a sort of legendary entrepreneur.

He’s also clearly a bully, and he’s also someone who clearly likes to get in fights. Right now, it’s me. It’s been Bezos, Gates, Zuckerberg, lots of other people. And I think fundamentally, this is about OpenAI doing really well. Elon cares about doing really well. Elon started, and now runs, a very direct competitor that’s trying to do exactly what OpenAI does. Everything we’re doing, I believe Elon would be happy about if he were in control of the company.

ChatGPT now works with a few new desktop apps.

OpenAI’s 11th “ship-mas” drop: ChatGPT’s desktop app now works with Apple Notes, Notion, Quip, and some new coding apps.

CPO Kevin Weil calls it “agentic.” I tried it — it’s slow, and I don’t feel comfortable letting it access my private Notion stuff, but I could see it being useful for coding instead.

An OpenAI outage is holding up emails for logging or setting up ChatGPT accounts.

According to OpenAI’s status page, this issue has been going on for a few hours, even though user reports stretch back even further:

Some users may not receive verification emails for login or signup with username and password.

The most recent update note says that new users can still sign up using a Google, Microsoft, or Apple account, and when we tried logging in, after a few failed attempts, it stopped attempting to verify by email and logged in successfully.

Sora can be a bit of an eyesore.

It’s impressive, but we’re not the only ones who found the results from OpenAI’s new AI video model tend to be a bit weird. It struggles with natural movement, often includes additional appendages or other visual distortions, and sometimes ignores half your prompt directions entirely.

Inside the launch — and future — of ChatGPT

OpenAI worried that ChatGPT would be a dud two years ago. Now, the stakes have never been higher.

Update: ChatGPT is back online.

The website appears to be functioning normally again. OpenAI says it’s now investigating what caused of the outage that occurred between 3:16PM PT and 7:38PM PT yesterday.

We began to see recovery for API traffic starting at approximately 5:40pm PST, and for ChatGPT and Sora around 6:50pm PST. We mitigated the issues at 7:38 pm PST, and all services are now fully operational.

The macOS integration showcased document analysis capabilities, and the new camera button on the iPhone 16 can open ChatGPT’s vision feature.

ChatGPT’s side-by-side ‘Canvas’ view is now available to everyone.

As part of its 12 days of “ship-mas” event, OpenAI announced the release of Canvas out of preview, making it easier to view and tweak lengthy writing or sections of code generated by ChatGPT. The tool can now also execute Python code and be used within custom GPTs.

OpenAI closed Sora applications shortly after launch.

A message currently displayed on the signup page says that account creation is temporarily unavailable due to heavy traffic. On X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company had “significantly underestimated demand” and that it’ll take a while to get everyone access to Sora.
