OpenAI

OpenAI kicked off an AI revolution with DALL-E and ChatGPT, making the organization the epicenter of the artificial intelligence boom. Led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI became a story unto itself when Altman was briefly fired and then brought back after pressure from staff and Microsoft, an investor and close partner.

Former OpenAI employees say they left because the company was ‘too restrictive’ about AI research.

According to a report from Wired, sources at OpenAI say the company “has become more reluctant to release work that highlights the economic downsides of AI.” At least two employees have reportedly left as a result of research restrictions, including former researcher Tom Cunningham:

“In a parting message shared internally, Cunningham wrote that the team faced a growing tension between conducting rigorous analysis and functioning as a de facto advocacy arm for OpenAI, according to sources familiar with the situation.”

Sam Altman, on Jimmy Fallon:

“I cannot imagine having gone through figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT,” he said. While he does acknowledge that “clearly, people did it for a long time,” he says that he has “relied on it so much.”

Most of the interview was pretty boring, but the parents in The Verge’s Slack have been talking a lot about that part.

The end of OpenAI’s ‘code red’ response to Google.

CEO Sam Altman said the emergency designation will finish when the company releases a faster AI model with better images and personality in January, the Wall Street Journal reports. Its first response to Gemini 3, an updated model called GPT-5.2, is set to launch this week.

Nick Thompson, The Atlantic’s CEO, has six takeaways from a lunch with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

In a TikTok video, Thompson, former editor-in-chief at Wired and a friend of The Verge, touches on things like the gap between AI’s capabilities and its impact, OpenAI competing with Apple on hardware, memory as OpenAI’s biggest moat, and more.

ChatGPT allegedly encouraged a violent stalker.

Brett Michael Dadig is being charged with 14 counts of “cyberstalking, interstate stalking, and interstate threats,” 404 Media reports. Dadig claims that OpenAI’s ChatGPT told him to keep producing his women-hating podcast because it gave him more “haters,” which led to more money, and to keep going to places where “wife types” meet up.

Sam Altman is going on The Tonight Show next week.

LateNighter points out that the OpenAI boss is scheduled to appear on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show next week, on December 8th, along with Mila Kunis and St. Paul & the Broken Bones.

He’ll probably be talking all about ChatGPT, and not this WSJ report about previously-explored plans for OpenAI to invest in a rocket company.

Anthropic’s racing OpenAI to go public.

The AI startup has hired law firm Wilson Sonsini for an IPO that could happen as early as next year, the FT reports. OpenAI is reportedly eyeing the second half of 2026 for its own.

Anthropic just made its first acquisition, too, buying software maker Bun.

People can now use ChatGPT’s Voice feature directly in the chat.

There’s “no separate mode needed,” OpenAI wrote on X. “You can talk, watch answers appear, review earlier messages, and see visuals like images or maps in real time.”

OpenAI can’t say “Cameo” for one month.

Cameo, the service that gives purpose to has-beens, has secured a temporary restraining order that prohibits Altman and Co from using “Cameo” to name a Sora feature that lets people insert themselves and characters into AI-generated videos. The TRO expires shortly after a trademark hearing scheduled for December 19th.

OpenAI just released ChatGPT for teachers.

In addition to aiding students (maybe a little too much), now OpenAI is taking aim at teachers with a version of ChatGPT that’s supposed to provide them with a “secure workspace” to prepare lessons, create quizzes, or adapt assignments. ChatGPT for teachers is available to educators for free until June 2027.

Who could have guessed that giving kids a teddy bear with ChatGPT built in was a bad idea?

The answer is probably anyone. Or at least anyone who didn’t work for FoloToy, the makers of Kumma, a $99 AI-enabled plushie that’s now been pulled from shelves after researchers at the US PIRG Education Fund got the bear to discuss sexually explicit topics, offer advice on where to find knives, and give instructions on lighting matches. In the report, researchers said:

We were surprised to find how quickly Kumma would take a single sexual topic we introduced into the conversation and run with it, simultaneously escalating in graphic detail while introducing new sexual concepts of its own.

OpenAI rolled out GPT-5.1 Pro to all Pro users.

The company said that in early testing, users rated it “especially highly for writing help, data science, and business questions.” Enterprise users should receive access next Monday, per OpenAI. GPT-5 Pro, the new model’s predecessor, will be available via the legacy model dropdown menu for 90 days before OpenAI retires it.

Gamers Nexus reports that the cost of many consumer DDR5 and DDR4 RAM kits has increased drastically recently.

But why? There’s a lot to it, but AI datacenter projects, like OpenAI’s Stargate (which the company expects to require 900,000 semiconductor wafers per month), might be contributing to this trend.

OpenAI board member calls pedophile Jeffrey Epstein his “wing man” in an email.

After CEO Sam Altman was fired and then unfired from OpenAI, Larry Summers was added to OpenAI’s board to replace the board members that had nixed Altman. In recently-released email messages, Summers seeks advice from Epstein on pursuing a woman he describes as a “mentee.” Hm!
