TVs

You can watch movies and shows from Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and other services on a smartphone or a tablet, but a dedicated TV will always be something special. It’s the centerpiece of your living room, and the only display that you can truly cozy up to on the couch for hours on end. If you want to get more out of your purchase, you can make it even better with a powerful sound system and by hooking up a few game consoles, like the Nintendo Switch, PS4, or Xbox One. The latest 4K (and soon, 8K) displays from Sony, Samsung, LG, Vizio, and more deliver enhanced visual quality, better value, and smart features that you can’t find on other screens outside of your local cinema. If you’re looking for the latest TV news, how-tos on optimizing your home theater setup, and reviews for OLED and LCD TVs, you’ve come to the right place.

Sony teases 2023 TV lineup news for March 1st.

Sony broke from tradition and didn’t announce new TVs at CES 2023. Instead, its keynote was used as a showcase for Afeela. But according to the company’s UK Twitter account, you can expect to get the full details for Sony’s latest Bravia XR lineup on March 1st. Prepare yourselves for some very nice screens.

The HDMI spec continues to be pretty busted.

The idea of HDMI is you shouldn’t have to worry about bandwidth or VRR or any other part of the alphanumeric soup that makes up the HDMI spec. You should just care about HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 or 1.4 or what have you. But as the video below explains, loopholes exist that make buying the right TV to plug all your HDMI 2.1 gadgets into pretty dang difficult.

If you were hoping most 2023 TVs would have the best version of HDMI 2.1 on every input, you’d be wrong.

I’m captivated by Gritty’s recreation of the idle DVD screensaver.

Is this the sort of thing I’d expect to see at an NHL game? Or from a mascot in any sport? Absolutely not.

But it’s all perfect. The smooth motion. The rebound off each side of the TV screen outline. Most of all, the roar of the crowd when the DVD logo finally lands in a corner at just the right angle. It really takes you back.

Never change, Gritty.

LG is recalling 56,000 of its giant 86-inch TVs.

Nobody has reported an injury yet, but the 100-pound televisions can — and have — tipped over when using their optional stand legs. You can contact LG to get a free repair and free replacement parts.

LG’s Signature OLED M is (almost) wireless.

A few years ago LG’s gimmick for the highest-end version of its OLED TV was a paper-thin display that you could slap on the wall and connect to its soundbar / base station with a single wire.

In 2023, LG’s top-of-the-line 97-inch 4K OLED doesn’t need the connecting wire at all.

From wireless to 8K and back to more reasonable options, Verge editor and reviewer Chris Welch is ready to walk you through the entire lineup.

The exec in charge of Roku’s new TVs came from... TCL.

Roku hasn’t said who is building the new TVs it just announced at CES, but it’s fascinating they have ex-TCL exec Chris Larson running things. A little badge engineering goes a long way, I suppose.

Two Samsung projectors can automatically create one giant image.

We weren’t impressed by the $900 original, but the 2023 Freestyle has a neat little trick called Smart Edge Blending that automatically stitches the images of two projectors into a single ultra-wide display with a 21:9 aspect ratio.

Only catch? If buying one Freestyle wasn’t worth it, who’d actually buy two?

Our roundup has more details about the refreshed Freestyle and the rest of Samsung’s new TV lineup.

I hope David Lynch one day directs the film of a little girl who overcomes her fear of televisions, despite the lies told by Icelandic poets.

3D cinema, a remembrance.

I spent so much time covering 3DTV in my baby gadget blogger days, but it was always doomed because no one wants to wear the glasses. The Ringer looks back at Avatar, James Cameron, and his short-lived 3D phenomenon.

Rewatching Avatar now, its best moments still have a weightless, stratospheric kick, and you can understand why insiders and observers would have bet on a wide-scale 3D revolution. The early 2010s featured wildly profitable 3D releases encompassing fairy-tale adaptations (Alice in Wonderland), Pixar crowd-pleasers (Toy Story 3), and keynote MCU entries (Captain America: the First Avenger). For a brief moment, polarized glasses were basically mandatory for any summertime theater outing.
