Dynabook, the company that took control of Toshiba’s laptop operation before it axed that business earlier this month, is releasing two new laptops built with Intel’s new 11th Gen Tiger Lake processors. Both laptops, the Portégé X30W-J convertible and the Portégé X30L-J standard clamshell, are less than 1kg (about 2.2 pounds) and have 13.3-inch screens. The company will release these machines in Q4 2020, and pricing will be shared closer to launch date.

These new models have 53Wh batteries and are built with magnesium alloy (not plastic) to achieve that low weight — under 900 grams (1.98lbs) for the clamshell variant. Each can be outfitted with either Intel’s Core i5-1135G7 or the Core i7-1165G7. (Both processors support Iris Xe graphics.) They also have two Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 6, fingerprint readers, and support up to 1080p touchscreens with Windows Hello-ready IR webcams. Dynabook claims that each laptop is designed to pass the MIL-STD-810G certification for durability, though that’s not the same as actually passing certification.

They’re also part of Intel’s Project Athena specification, which should hopefully mean decent battery life.

The Portégé X30L-J has a higher ceiling for the rest of its specs and features. It can support up to 48GB of RAM (compared to 32GB in the 2-in-1 Portégé X30W-J), and it has an extra USB Type-A port, an RJ-45 Ethernet port, and an optional Accupoint pointing device that’s similar to the ThinkPad’s excellent TrackPoint nub.
