High schoolers ‘didn’t violate any laws’ by creating a racist deepfake of their principal.

During Black History month this year, students at Carmel High School in Carmel, New York created AI deepfake videos depicting their principal saying racist slurs and threatening Black students. According to local police, the students’ actions were completely legal.

Protections for deepfake victims are already murky. And as AI deepfaking tools become increasingly accessible, more incidents like this will likely emerge.
