Android is Google’s open-source mobile operating system; think of it like a public park compared to Apple’s walled garden. It dates back to 2007, and though its dessert-inspired version names were retired in 2019 for a straightforward numbering system, there will always be a special place in our hearts for an OS called “Oreo” and “Ice Cream Sandwich.

Epic’s economist argues that the Google settlement is better than the alternative.

He appears to have been commissioned by Epic to analyze the settlement’s modified injunction vs. Judge Donato’s original injunction. “There are some very important pluses, there are some very important minuses,” says Bernheim.

His “main pluses” include:

 • “Registered app store program offers low-friction path for stores to get onto users’ phones” (but how does he know it’s low-friction?)
 • No fees on competing app stores or the apps they distribute
 • Global steering and alternative payment systems, with capped fees

Main minuses?

 • Removes the catalog access remedy (Google won’t be forced to offer its apps to other stores)
 • Removes the store distribution remedy (Google won’t be forced into store-within-a-store)
 • Allows Google to insist on side-by-side billing (app devs would still have to offer Google Play Billing alongside their own)

Epic is starting with Doug Bernheim, a Stanford economist.

He’s just been sworn in, and he’s prepared slides; Unfortunately, the screen on my side of the room is dead, so I’ve migrated to the other side, apologizing to several people who graciously moved for me. Bernheim featured prominently during the trial portion of this case.

I’m live from the courtroom with Epic CEO Tim Sweeney and head of Android Sameer Samat.

We’re about to hear the bitter foes-turned-BFFs explain why Judge James Donato should accept their settlement after five-plus years of legal battle. Judge Donato has just entered; Sweeney was on his phone but has put it away. Samat was waiting patiently; he’s got an eye-catching thin beaded bracelet on his wrist.

“High-friction.”

That’s how Google Play’s “chief product explainer” Matthew Forsythe describes the in-development Android sideloading workflow designed to allow “experienced users” to install apps from unverified developers, with multiple warnings to explain the risks.

Android expert Mishaal Rahman will no longer be posting Android news.

Rahman has reported on a dizzying number of new features coming to Android over the past 10 years — we’ve covered many of his findings! — but he’s leaving Android Authority for something new, he announced today. Wishing him all the best!

Google is bringing a useful Meet feature for hybrid meetings to iOS and Android.

Google is adding Meet’s automatic conference room detection feature to the Meet and Gmail mobile apps. First launched on laptops last year, it uses silent ultrasound signals that are picked up by your phone’s mic to automatically check you into your conference room and prompt you to join Meet calls with your device in Companion mode, avoiding annoying feedback or other problems.

Now Android and iOS users will automatically get the “Companion mode” prompt in conference rooms.

JerryRigEverything bends the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold beyond its limits.

Samsung’s three-panel foldable phone won’t be officially available in the US until next year, but it’s already hit the YouTuber’s durability test table. Its thin frame (that’s different sizes across all three sections) doesn’t deal well with being bent the wrong way, even if Samsung’s hinge technology is pretty resilient, but... it didn’t explode.

Press play for a peek at the test results and a look at all three internal battery cells.

Valve’s Android compatibility layer now has its official name, Lepton, and a cute frog logo.

The name Lepton appeared on Steam and SteamDB just a few weeks after Valve unveiled the Steam Frame headset, which will be able to run Android apps.

In our new interview with Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais, he mentioned the Frame uses “a similar compatibility layer as Proton, just targeted at Android.”

Android expands in-call scam protections to the US.

The feature was first piloted in the UK earlier this year, and works by automatically warning users when they launch eligible financial apps while screen sharing during calls with numbers that aren’t in the device’s contact list. The warning forces a 30-second pause period that aims to “break the spell of the scammers’ social engineering,” according to Google.

The warning message will also provide guidance on how to avoid being scammed and prompt users to end the call.

Why else would you call?

One of Google’s new Android updates is the beta for Call Reason, which allows callers to flag that it’s urgent. Sounds smart, but if you’re below the age of 40, “urgent” might be the only type of call you ever make.

Sorry but if literally anyone I know is calling me instead of texting, it’s already urgent.

Google’s December Pixel update comes with a long list of fixes.

For everything from the Pixel 6 on up, there are a lot of bug fixes and improvements on the list for this month’s update, as well as two “Critical” severity security bugs patched.

In addition to the wider list of Android updates confirmed today, the list covers a bunch of freezes and screen glitches on newer devices, including screen brightness that could dim unexpectedly on Pixel 10 phones.

Chrome on Android is getting pinned tabs.

After being added to the desktop version of the browser almost a decade ago, the mobile version of Chrome will soon let you pin tabs as part of Android 16’s new updates. Pinned tabs will be easily accessible at the front of your browser so they’re easier to find and can’t be accidentally closed.

Google’s AirDrop workaround is doing something screwy with Wi-Fi.

Android Police spotted that just opening the file send menu is enough to disconnect your phone from Wi-Fi following the new Quick Share update that lets Pixel 10 users send files to iPhones over AirDrop. Switching focus to another app is enough to reconnect though, so this bug feels harmless enough.

Just opening this menu was enough to kill my Wi-Fi connection, but returning to the home screen made it reconnect.

Isn’t that how it’s always spelt?

I admit, I have a British bias here, but like this commenter I was unreasonably pleased to see Google spell its upcoming Aluminium OS the right way.

huge win for folks who have always spelled aluminium correctly

Ayaneo’s new handheld has a hidden touchpad that doubles as a joystick.

The company shared new details about its Pocket Vert this week. Its minimal controls mimic the Game Boy with a D-pad and action buttons, but the Android-based handheld also features a hidden multipurpose touchpad beneath its front glass panel that can be used as a thumbstick for playing 3D games.

The Pocket Vert features a metal CNC-carved body, a 3.5-inch LCD display, a front glass panel, and “crystal-textured keyless buttons.”
Beneath the handheld’s D-pad and buttons is an area that functions as a touchpad. The Ayaneo Pocket DMG offered similar functionality, but its touchpad wasn’t hidden.
The touchpad’s functionality can be customized to replicate a left or right thumbstick, or both, and it can function like a mouse.
Pricing, availability, and performance details haven’t been announced yet, but the Pocket Vert will come in moon white, lava red, and midnight black color options.

Android 17 might add native game controller remapping.

Normally, you’re kind of stuck with the button mapping video game developers choose, based on your controller of choice. But Android Authority has found evidence in the latest Android Canary release that Google is adding native remapping. That’s huge for improving accessibility and support for cloud gaming, where titles aren’t usually built with Android in mind.

Google Play will label apps that use “excessive” battery in the background.

Google is cracking down on apps that prevent a device from going to sleep for a long period of time by performing activities in the background. Starting March 1st, 2026, Google will begin hiding some of these battery-draining apps from recommendations and may even display a warning label on their Play Store listings.
