The sights, sounds, and BSoDs of retail.

A lot of things are powered by computers, even retail signage. It’s an easy thing to forget, that is, until they stop working as intended. I adore seeing glitchy displays and kiosks at stores. I especially love seeing the many, many people who walk by them, not seeming to notice or care.

I hope you saw at least one sign that was on the fritz during your holiday travels. If you have a particularly good one to share, send a pic to my email: [email protected]

This incredibly dangerous Christmas tree is actually a spinning holographic display.

Creator Sean Hodgins connected a chain of individually-addressable RGB LEDs to a Raspberry Pi 4 and a 1/2 horsepower motor to form the “digital, human-sized-blender” (via Hackaday).

It can be programmed to display graphics like bonfires or a Christmas tree (festive!) but requires a blast shield to protect users from its rapidly spinning blades (not so festive).

The flights are grounded, but Santa carries on.
