Long live the mute switch.

The OnePlus 12 launches globally on January 23rd, but testing is underway. I can’t tell you how much it costs or when it will be available, but I can show you this marbled green finish on my review unit. I don’t know, it’s kind of growing on me? One thing’s for sure: it’s one of the last places you’ll find a dedicated mute switch.

Come get your Verizon settlement money.

Verizon customers who were charged an “administrative charge” in recent years might be entitled to a piece of a $100 million class action settlement. A lawsuit alleged that the company added a bogus fee to customers’ bills to squeeze money out of them.

The charge must have occurred between 2016 and last year. The deadline to submit a claim is April 15. Here’s the claim form.

The FCC wants to know what automakers are doing to protect domestic violence survivors.

Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel wrote letters to nine major automakers, including GM, Toyota, Ford, and Tesla, to ask what kind of data they collect about their drivers and how they protect their privacy. Rosenworcel sent similar letters to Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, too.

The letters came in response to a report from The New York Times last month, which detailed how a domestic violence survivor was harassed by her abuser using her car’s connected services. “We must do everything we can to help survivors stay safe,” Rosenworcel said. “We need to work with auto and wireless industry leaders to find solutions.”

Android might let you force dark mode in any app.

Android expert and new feature hunter Mishaal Rahman spotted a new toggle in development in the latest Android beta: an option to turn on dark mode even in apps that don’t support it. If you don’t feel like waiting, you can already try the feature out by enabling developer settings.

Who doesn’t love a toolbar?

Gboard is adding a new one that pops up whenever you connect a physical keyboard to an Android tablet. You’ll get quick access to emoji, text suggestions, and importantly, an option to show which keyboard shortcuts the app you’re using supports — handy indeed.

What if your Samsung flip phone could flip further?

Imagine no more: one of Samsung Display’s two new folding flip phone concepts at CES 2024 does that: the Samsung Display Flex In&Out.

The other is the Flex Liple, which I hear stands for “light” and “simple.” Since they both ditch the cover screen, perhaps it’s a way to manufacture less expensive flip phones, too.

This OtterBox case looks like leather, but it’s actually all… cactus?

Hailed by some as a more sustainable leather alternative, the company claims its new nopal cactus leather cases require fewer greenhouse gas emissions as well as resources like land and water.

OtterBox says the cases are ruggedized to military standards, too. Hopefully, that means they’re more durable than Apple’s terrible leather replacement. The cactus leather cases will be available for iPhones in black, green, purple, and brown for $59.99 this spring.

LG’s “living space on wheels” AlphaWare software puts webOS in cars’ dashboards.

LG showed off a “digital cockpit system display AR / MR platform AI and 5G telematics technology” AlphaWare concept at CES today. It includes its Automotive Content Platform, which puts LG software on screens throughout cars, and uses AI to do things like recognize drivers or detect when kids have fallen asleep.

The company says the software is based on webOS and integrates with automakers’ infotainment systems.

Ironflex is pretty metal.

Samsung is apparently trying to trademark the word for foldable OLED panels, as reported by Android Central. My guess is that it’s some marketing term for more durable foldable screens — perhaps for the next Z Fold and Z Flip?
