Instagram’s ‘Flipside’ feature creates a finsta forclose friends.

This Instagram feature was spotted late last year, but now some people say it’s live on their accounts.

Going a step further than “Close Friends” posts that are only visible to a select few, it enables another version of a person’s profile with a different name, details, and profile picture, with photos, reels, and stories that only approved accounts can see.

Framework will send us another Framework Laptop 16 — and here’s what it will fix.

We told Framework we had several different stability issues, so I was a little frustrated to see the company’s CEO suggest I only encountered one... but I’m happy to say Framework will send The Verge a final production unit with quite a list of hardware and software fixes!

The DPC_Watchdog_Violation freeze, at least, does seem to be fixed in my testing with a newer BIOS.

The PC slump is nearly over, Intel Q4 2023 / FY23 earnings suggest.

Not only did Intel’s consumer chips see 33 percent gains ($8.8B revenue), the CFO said on today’s earning call that “customer inventory levels have normalized” and Intel saw “record performance notebook shipments in the quarter.”

While PCs were down in 2023 overall, they got close to pre-pandemic numbers of 260-270M shipments globally, and Intel’s bullish on AI upgrades.

Intel says it hit its goal of $3B in cost-cutting in 2023, and made $2.66B in profit in Q4 (up from $796M loss this time last year).

Apple might finally put the next iPad Pro’s front camera in the right spot.

I can’t think of a single time I’ve ever opened my iPad Pro’s front-facing camera while holding the tablet in portrait orientation.

I can think of many times I’ve used it in landscape during video calls, where I’ve probably looked like an inattentive jerk because the position of the camera makes it seem like I’m always glancing off to the side.

Apparently Apple will right this wrong with the upcoming OLED iPad Pro rumored to arrive soon. Code in iOS 17.4 says that “iPad needs to be in landscape” during Face ID setup.

The iPad Pro is the only iPad with Face ID. So, praise be. They did it.

I dedicate this post to the NSA agent who’s assigned to looking at my cat photos.

The NSA is buying your internet data!

Intelligence and law enforcement agencies sometimes purchase potentially sensitive and revealing domestic data from brokers that would require a court order to acquire directly.

Internet metadata can reveal sensitive information, such as whether someone is seeing “a telehealth provider who focuses on birth control or abortion medication,” Senator Ron Wyden says in his letter confirming the NSA is firmly in your business.

What are GPTs good for, anyway?

Like Emilia, I’ve really only found GPTs to be useful for a few specific tasks. In my case, generating Google Sheets formulas. Now, most of the formulas I get from Bing and Bard are slightly wrong, but that’s good, actually. I’m learning a lot about spreadsheet formulas by figuring out why they’re wrong. Task failed successfully.

Third-party iOS app store announcements are already rolling out.

One of the first we’ve seen is AltStore, which made its announcement after Apple’s big news today. The post indicates it’s planning to make its app marketplace available on iOS in March.

The iOS 17.4 beta also includes a small emoji update.

MacRumors points out that today’s beta release of iOS 17.4 with EU-required sideloading also includes several new emoji characters. A head shaking horizontally, a head shaking vertically, a phoenix, a lime, a brown mushroom, and a broken chain were approved by the Unicode Consortium last fall and published as part of Emoji 15.1.
