Apple brought Clarus to the Mac’s 40th birthday party.

Tim Cook shared a fun animation celebrating the 40th anniversary of the original Macintosh, and hidden amongst the colorful array of products and iconography is none other than Clarus, a lesser-known piece of Mac history otherwise referred to as the “dogcow.”

Designed by legendary graphic designer Susan Kare for the original Macintosh as part of the Cairo font, Clarus continues to make cameos in Apple’s software. Stephen Hackett has a great write-up at 512 Pixels on Clarus that I highly recommend, especially on a day like today.

TikTok videos are getting even longer.

At some point, we should probably question whether TikTok is still actually a short form video platform. As TechCrunch reports, TikTok is now testing 30 minute-long videos with some users — which is more like a YouTube video essay than a TikTok clip.

TikTok has gradually stretched the length of videos, and right now users can upload content up to 10 minutes long. Creators who monetize on the platform can also share 20 minute paywalled videos that fans buy access to.

Google Classroom can automatically remind students about upcoming assignments.

New updates coming “soon” to Google Classroom will let teachers notify students about homework due dates right on the home screens of their Chromebooks.

Those Chromebooks should also last longer, as Google announced last year that it will provide 10 years of automatic updates to Chromebooks, but only for laptops bought in 2021 or later. That, unfortunately, doesn’t cover Chromebooks bought in 2020 at the start of the pandemic, which are now breaking down or reaching their end-of-life expiration dates.

Etsy will give shoppers AI gift suggestions.

The company’s new Gift Mode feature asks shoppers a few questions about the gift recipient and then uses AI and human editorial reviews to recommend products.

Tim Holley, VP of product, says the suggestions are based on Etsy’s systems that power things like search and recommendations, and give preference to items “predicted to be high quality” with good customer service. The gift section could be a lucrative space for sellers — Etsy today also published a guide for how merchants can optimize their products for Gift Mode.

Verizon sees a future in streaming bundles.

Verizon already offers a Disney Plus package, along with its new Netflix and Max bundle, but the company plans on announcing “more bundles and perks this year,” The Information reports.

That includes bundles with “several services” and not just two. As more people cut cable for streaming, The Information notes Verizon is likely looking to act as a middle-man to help users manage their services — all while getting a cut of those subscriptions.

Apple thought it dealt with Epic v. Apple — has it really?

Apple has started letting developers link to third-party payment processors, but only if it’s on Apple’s own terms.

Cash App joins F1.

Or, more specifically, Visa Cash App RB, which is the new name of the team formerly known as Alpha Tauri. The rebranding is apparently part of an attempt to move the team, now called V-CARB internally, according to ESPN, up within the sport’s midfield runners.

Boeing may have made the installation mistake behind the 737 Max 9 blowout.

A source familiar with the situation tells The Seattle Times the doorplug that blew out of the Alaska Airlines flight was “removed for repair then reinstalled improperly by Boeing mechanics” on the final assembly line.

That would put the brunt of the blame on Boeing, instead of Spirit AeroSystems, the company that initially installed the panel, The Seattle Times reports. The FAA’s investigation is still ongoing.

Is this the Pixel 8a?

X user chunvn8888 posted pictures purporting to be the retail packaging for the yet-unannounced Pixel 8a yesterday, as spotted by 9to5Google.

Unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like the Pixel 8. Assuming it follows in the footsteps of past budget Pixels, expect the same Tensor processor as the pricier models, but some skimping on fancier features.

A new game is bringing D&D to VR.

Dice? Check. Character sheet? Check. VR headset....well. Details are slim surrounding this “future release” besides it being a collaboration between Hasbro and Resolution Games — the studio that released it’s own VR tabletop roleplaying title Demeo back in 2021.

I’d be suprised if Hasbro isn’t cooking up other D&D-related projects too given the love Baldur’s Gate 3 and Honor Among Thieves recieved last year.

Today on The Vergecast: Walt Mossberg on the Mac at 40, and Ali Abdaal on productivity tools.

After 40 years, the Mac line is as strong and successful as ever — does it have another four decades to go? And in 2064, will we be talking about the Vision Pro launch the same way we talk about the Macintosh?

Our good friend Walt Mossberg has some thoughts. Then YouTuber and author Ali Abdaal talks about his book, “Feel Good Productivity,” and why my to-do app habit is really not helping me get anything done. Click here to listen in your preferred podcast app.
