I’m slightly pissed at NACS.

My heart was set on a Hyundai Ioniq 5 this year. But it looks like the industry may turn against its industry-standard CCS charging plug — in favor of Tesla’s fake-it-till-you-make-it “North American Charging Standard,” aka NACS. Ford is switching, Hyundai is considering it, and just today Polestar and Electrify America joined the Tesla bandwagon.

The Ioniq would be a $50K investment — I didn’t have range anxiety about that before, but I do now! Yes, CCS will be around for a while yet, but I’m still annoyed that today’s non-Tesla EVs no longer look futureproof.

Tesla might be readying support for third-party apps.

As spotted by Not a Tesla App, Tesla has added a new “Third Party Apps” account setting that lets you “manage third-party apps with access to your account.”

It’s too early to tell what exactly this means, but it could be a sign that Tesla could start allowing third-party integrations into its vehicles, potentially opening up possibilities for new navigation tools, efficiency trackers, and more.

Now Polestar is plugging into Tesla’s Superchargers too.

After adding the SAE and Volvo to its list in recent days, Tesla has announced a deal linking its Supercharger network and preferred NACS charging plug to Polestar.

Similar to other companies that recently signed up, like GM and Ford, Polestar plans to make adapters for its current cars available in 2024 and says that from 2025 on, the electric cars it sells in North America will include the NACS port by default.

God that’s just a big silly wiper.

You know how Steve Jobs initially responded to iPhone 4 antenna issues with “just avoid holding it in this way”? That, but for rain.

Everyone wants a piece of the Tesla Powerwall.

Energy prices are high, the grid is increasingly unstable, and solar panels and giant batteries are more affordable than ever. No wonder Tesla Powerwall sales are accelerating, according to Electrek. But competition is getting fierce, with newcomers like Anker and EcoFlow joining the mix just this week.

In a (now-deleted, as of 12:20PM ET) post, the Tesla Powerwall Twitter account said it had “Just surpassed 500k Powerwall installs globally!” and promised a $500 rebate per unit. The tweet has not been reposted so far.

Tesla buys cobalt and nickel from Glencore, a mining giant with at least 70 allegations of human rights abuses against it.

The Washington Post takes a close look at Tesla Autopilot crash statistics.

Tesla’s self-driving features have been involved in 736 crashes and 17 fatalities, according to The Washington Post.

The Post says its analysis shows the number of crashes is far more than has been reported before, but notes that NHTSA says just because driver-assistance features were involved doesn’t mean they were the cause.

The Autopilot feature is currently under NHTSA investigation.
