    Can Teslas see ghosts?

A few TikTokers seem to think they can, so we reached out to Sam Abuelsamid, an expert in vehicle automation and vision systems, to see if we can figure out what’s going on. Long story short: cameras can be super unreliable!

    Trunk-or-treat gets an EV upgrade.

I grew up in the Midwest, but I still had no idea about this phenomenon of people dressing up their car’s trunks to look like monsters and then filling them with candy for the little trick-or-treaters. So I was delighted to see that EV owners are now doing the same, but with their vehicle’s frunks. Tesla owners do it, and now so do the Ford Mustang Mach-E owners. Maybe skip the F-150 Lightning, though? I doubt most kids could reach that high.

The Honda Accord has come a long way.

The 11th generation version of Honda’s stalwart four-door sedan is getting a hybrid powertrain, a much bigger touchscreen (blergh), and built-in Google apps. It’s a reminder that Honda is co-developing vehicles with General Motors, which is also releasing vehicles with native Google applications.

It also shows just how far the Accord has come over its extended lifespan. My first car was an ‘88 Accord, and I’m having some difficulty picturing that boxy beauty sitting alongside this highly polished gizmo.

The 5G monolith watches over all of us.

I had totally forgotten about those supertall 5G-transmitting “smart poles” that have started going up in New York City, so it was a little shocking to see just how utterly gargantuan they really are. They’re three-stories tall! I’m sure they’ll fit in better once they’re covered in stickers, graffiti tags, and “Dan Smith will teach you guitar” leaflets.

Do truck owners want their trucks to look “brutish”?

That’s how GMC’s head of exterior design described the front-end of the new Sierra EV Denali to me earlier this week. I suppose there’s some truth to it, considering how well these brutish, boxy trucks sell in the US.

But the description takes on a darker tone when you consider how many people are killed each year by big trucks, and the role that exterior design plays in these deaths. Consumer Reports did an extensive rundown last year. Et tu, brutish?

GMC Sierra EV Denali revealed: plug-in-powered pickup goes premium

The oversize electric truck will get an estimated 400 miles of range and can power a whole house for up to 21 days. Is it just me, or is the electric truck category getting crowded?

    Arrival announces its own Brexit.

The cash-strapped EV startup just announced it would be winding down its UK operations in favor refocusing its business in the US. The main reason is the Inflation Reduction Act’s tax credit rules requiring EVs to be made in the US. It’s unclear how far the company will go with only $330 million of cash on hand and its stock price in the gutter. Better get cracking!
