A Samsung and Google Cloud deal is powering AI features on Galaxy S24 phones.

The price of running generative AI is high, so it’s not surprising Samsung and Google have teamed up to power the new features in Galaxy S24 phones.

This is the first use deploying Gemini Pro on Vertex AI to customers, for summarization in Notes, Voice Recorder, and Keyboard. It’s also using Imagen 2 for Generative Edit on photos, as well as Gemini Ultra for complex tasks and, like the Pixel 8 Pro, Gemini Nano as an on-device LLM.

Nvidia’s new RTX 4070 Super GPUs are now available.

In his review, Tom Warren calls the first RTX 40-series Super card from Nvidia “one that I would seriously consider for a 1440p PC build,” and if you’ve been waiting for a PC gaming upgrade that won’t destroy your budget, this might be the one.

Along with a new Game Ready driver, 4070 Super hardware is now available at stores like Amazon, Best Buy, B&H, and Newegg for $599.99 and up, depending on the card.

Tesla Supercharger in Chicago packed with “dead robots” that can’t charge in the cold.

Electrek points out this Fox 32 report from Monday showing Teslas that couldn’t charge in subzero temperatures, similar to issues some drivers reported last winter.

It’s unclear if drivers failed to warm the batteries by preconditioning (EVs in Norway, for example, seem to get by somehow) or if the chargers failed, and Tesla doesn’t respond to questions. Another report from WGN News points to long lines at functioning stations and includes a service center operator telling people to park their cars inside if possible.

Elon Musk is uncomfortable with the amount of control Elon Musk has over Tesla.

The Tesla CEO and X CTO / owner writes that “I am uncomfortable growing Tesla to be a leader in AI & robotics without having ~25% voting control,” and proposed building products (like Grok?) outside of Tesla instead.

Musk’s stake in the company reportedly dropped to 13.4 percent in 2022 as he sold shares and acquired X, then known as Twitter. Now there’s this statement, a recent WSJ report citing concerns about drug use, and... Tesla’s Q4 earnings report coming up on January 24th.

“I am uncomfortable growing Tesla to be a leader in AI & robotics without ~25% control. Enough to be influential, but not so much I can’t be overturned. Unless that is the case, I would prefer to build products outside of Tesla. You don’t seem to understand Tesla is not one startup, but a dozen. Simply look at the delta between what Tesla does and GM.  As for stock ownership itself being enough motivation, Fidelity and other own similar stakes. Why don’t they show up for work?”

Peacock’s AFC Wild Card game was the “most-streamed event ever in the US.”

Initial numbers from Nielsen and NBCUniversal are out, showing the audience Peacock pulled for the first streaming-exclusive NFL playoff game that reportedly cost around $110 million. They note a total of 27.6 million viewers, with a peak average of 24.6 million during the second quarter -- much higher than last month’s “holiday exclusive” game.

The Peacock Exclusive AFC Wild Card ranks as the most-streamed event ever in the U.S. with an average audience (AMA) of approximately 23.0 million viewers across Peacock, NBC stations in Miami and Kansas City, and on mobile with NFL+, according to Nielsen custom fast national data.

The streams we were watching mostly held up, if you saw the game, how was the experience for you?

Disclosure: Comcast, which owns NBCUniversal, is also an investor in Vox Media, The Verge’s parent company.

Keep an iPhone or iPad close by if you’re ordering a Vision Pro online.

If you’re spending $3,499 to be one of the first 70,000 or so people with Apple’s Vision Pro, we can probably assume you own a recent iPhone. But just in case, 9to5Mac points out details from an Apple email explaining the online ordering process.

Despite rumors of required in-store appointments for face scanning, it looks like Apple will let you use FaceID on another device to judge the fit requirements and provide a current prescription if you need the $149 vision-correcting lenses.

Have an iPhone or iPad with Face ID nearby. When you order Apple Vision Pro, you’ll need to scan your face with an iPhone or iPad with Face ID. This helps us determine the right size Light Seal and head bands, which work together to give you a precise fit. Make sure your Apple Store app is up to date. For the face scan, you’ll need the latest version of the Apple Store app, which became available on January 11.
