This was not a drill. (But tomorrow’s earthquake alert will be.)

The Silicon Valley and surrounding parts of Northern California just got an alarming message on their phones — a severe earthquake!

You’d be forgiven for assuming it was just a test. But no, the USGS’ ShakeAlert test is scheduled for tomorrow at 10:19AM, not today at 9:29AM, and there really was an earthquake. But it was quickly downgraded to a 4.1 — not a 5.7 as originally detected.

Your RTX 20 GPU can now AI-upscale blurry old web videos.

Previously exclusive to Nvidia’s RTX 30 and RTX 40 series cards, the company’s RTX Video Super Resolution technique for Chrome, Edge and VLC is now adding RTX 20 cards, too.

Nvidia says version 1.5 also “improves the quality even further to avoid over smoothing and increase the level of detail and can now enhance video when played back at native resolution.” Here’s the company’s FAQ:

Naraka Bladepoint gets frame generation today on Nvidia’s RTX 40 GPUs.

The DLSS 3.0 technique arrives today to dramatically increase perceived framerate by imagining lots of new frames, and the the speedy Naraka’s a good candidate — particularly since it already has Nvidia Reflex to soften the blow to latency. It’s part of a new GeForce driver today. AMD’s got similar tech, but also some catching up to do.

AMD accused of failing to deliver handheld gaming chips.

GPD, a boutique handheld PC maker that’s been kicking around long before the Steam Deck, is now pointing the finger at AMD for failing to deliver an entire batch of 7840U chips for its Win Max 2.

Practically every PC gaming handheld maker save Valve uses this chip or derivatives. Maybe a shortage? Bad blood? We’ve asked AMD to comment. Ayaneo has a clamshell coming out too...

Alienware’s Aurora R16 desktop is getting higher-end specs today.

While it strangely topped out at an RTX 4070 Ti at launch and no unlocked K-series CPUs, you should soon be able to nab a slimmed $3,499 prebuilt with an RTX 4090, Intel’s new Core i9-14900KF with 240mm liquid cooling, 32GB DDR5, two 1TB M.2 NVMe SSDs, and a 1000W PSU.

Bobby Kotick will apparently leave Microsoft to focus on philanthropy.

We knew the Activision Blizzard King CEO would stick around through the end of the year, but it seems he’s done after that.

He told Bloomberg he wants to focus on philanthropy, help reform education, and is thinking about how to “reduce hatred and intolerance in the world.”

In 2021, a bombshell report at the WSJ alleged Kotick was personally part of ABK’s sexual misconduct problem. Last year, he donated to a 2020 election protestor.

The best prices we’ve seen on Lego’s Atari 2600, UCS Landspeeder, and Hulkbuster.

If you’ve been sleeping on Lego’s incredible $240 Atari 2600 replica... good! You can now nab it for $192 from Lego or $202 from Amazon. I love the pop-up diorama.

The massive 21-inch tall Hulkbuster is also just $385 right now (normally $550), and the best Luke Lego Landspeeder yet is $168 at Amazon (normally $240).
