Apple Stores will be able to update iPhones while they’re boxed up.

It’s annoying when you have to update your new smartphone right after you buy it, right?

Mark Gurman wrote in his Power On newsletter for Bloomberg today that Apple Stores will start getting a “proprietary pad-like device” this year that, when employees put a box of unopened iPhones on it, will prompt the phones to turn on, update themselves, then turn off.

    Neat!

A California judge okays social media lawsuits alleging negligence.

State Judge Carolyn B. Kuhl will reportedly allow lawsuits in California that allege that social media companies’ negligence causes harm.

Bloomberg writes that the judge ruled that neither free speech laws nor Section 230 shield the companies from negligence claims using the premise that the platforms’ design features, rather than their content, harmed the plaintiffs. Judge Kuhl referred to the harms as “forseeable and substantial.”

Tesla released documentation that cracks open the door to third-party app support.

Elon Musk’s car company doesn’t officially support third-party apps, but developers can still use unofficial API documentation to make them. Tesla just made a small step in the direction of changing that.

Electrek reported last week that the company will deprecate its REST API by 2024, according to newly published documentation for its Tesla Vehicle Command SDK.

It’s been fun watching peoples’ eclipse shadow videos.

I’ve seen a few videos on TikTok, where people are amazed at the phenomenon of little eclipse shadows casting through trees.

If you’re curious why this happens, Sci Show made a good explainer a few years ago. These shadows are one of the ways to watch an eclipse happen.

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour made close to $100 million in its opening weekend.

Swifties and the Swift-curious (and probably some mix of obligated parents) reportedly pushed Taylor Swift’s theatrical release of her concert tour film to between $95 million and $97 million.

Variety reported that AMC says it can’t be more exact with its projections “without clear comparisons.” Rival theaters think the number is closer to $94 million, according to the outlet.

Either way, that’s a lot of money for a concert film and keeps it in the same territory as Joker’s October box office opening weekend record of about $96 million.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’s first full trailer is up.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Netflix’s anime take on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels, looks great translated to moving pictures in its first full trailer.

Netflix posted to its YouTube channel yesterday. This one focuses more on the show’s fights than the August teaser. You can tell because it uses that one song from Mortal Kombat. Except with new words and stuff.
