The new White House Cyber Trust label for smart devices could be a big deal.

The FCC shared a proposed Energy Star-like cybersecurity label and Cyber Trust logo for certified devices. It would show how long you can expect Internet of Things (IoT) devices to get updates, what kind of data is collected and if it’s shared, and much more.

We’ll see how much of it sticks, but what the FCC showed today was encouraging.

Two product boxes, each featuring a label on the front with the Cyber Trust shield, QR code, and relevant data.
Five variants of the Cyber Trust Mark, from top left to bottom right: blue to aqua, black, green to light green, light red to dark red, and white
Close-up image showing the security and privacy facts of the product as a short summary saying what kind of data is collected, if it’s shared, whether security updates are automatic, and what kind of access control it has, eg user-changeable passwords, multifactor authentication, or biometric authentication
Another closeup of the QR code label, this time showing that a device collects data for tailored advertising and monetization.

Nvidia adds DLSS 3, raytracing, and RTX IO in this free update to a Portal mod.

Called Portal: Prelude RTX, it’s free for owners of the original Portal on Steam once it’s released at 3PM ET today.

This is the first title to use Nvidia’s RTX IO, which supports both DirectStorage and Vulkan, using GPU cores to load compressed data directly from storage to the graphics card. The system is also being used in the PC port for Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart.

Portal Prelude is unrelated to the similarly-named side-scroller for graphing calculators.

YouTube Music Podcasts are now rolling out in Canada and Brazil.

Podcasts started showing up for YouTube Music users in the US back in April, with YouTube promising more countries to follow. Now that process has begun.

Last week, some Canadian and Brazilian users reported they were able to access podcasts in YouTube Music, according to 9to5Google. In an email to The Verge, YouTube Music communications manager Paul Pennington confirmed the rollout to both countries.

Criminals reportedly sold streams of children from hacked security cameras.

Access to hundreds of camera streams was offered via channels on Telegram, according to IPVM. Telegram has since banned the flagged channels.

Hikvision, the company that makes the hacked cameras, told IPVM it was unaware of the issue, despite years of existing reporting on its cameras’ vulnerabilities. Some of Hikvision’s hardware was banned for sale in the US last year, but many of its cameras remain available.

It’s the journey, not the destination.

Lego builds are endlessly fascinating and they get far more complicated, but I fully respect this person’s dedication to creating a small device for the sole purpose of lining up Lego-made dominoes.

Samsung may be testing ChatGPT summaries for its phones’ web browser.

Code in Samsung Internet Browser version 22.0.0.54 has several references to ChatGPT, as spotted by Android Authority.

Android Authority speculates that the integration as is would only be used to generate page summaries. Samsung is reportedly open to replacing Google as its default search engine, possibly due to Microsoft’s quick AI moves, so the idea of the company exploring its options isn’t far-fetched.

A teenager accused of hacking Rockstar Games has been deemed unfit to stand trial.

18-year-old Arion Kurtaj, who is accused of participating in a hacking spree that resulted in leaked early gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto VI, has been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial in a London court, according to Reuters.

As a result, the trial jury will “determine whether he committed the acts,” but won’t determine his guilt. Kurtaj was allegedly part of Lapsus$, a hacking group that gained notoriety for several high-profile cyberattacks last year.
