Here’s what one text message we received on Friday said:
Valued Verizon Customer - We let you down this week. For that we are truly sorry. We would like to extend you a $20 account credit that can be easily redeemed via the link below. On average, this covers multiple days of service. This credit isn’t meant to make up for what happened. But it’s a way of acknowledging your time and showing that this matters to us. If you’re still having trouble connecting, please restart your device (power down and power back on). To redeem your credit please visit m.vzw.com/MBrf9gFO and click on the Take Action or Mobile Actions button.
This particular text appears to be legitimate, but in general, this type of communication is a scammer’s paradise. You should always avoid clicking links in text messages, and instead just go to Verizon’s app or website. When we logged in, we were able to click on “Take action,” which brought up a pop-up allowing us to redeem the $20.
Verizon went down for customers across the US on Wednesday at around 12PM ET. The outage left many people unable to connect to the network, with their phones switching to SOS mode. The carrier resolved the outage at around 10:15PM ET, but didn’t say what caused the problem. If you’re still experiencing issues, Verizon suggests restarting your device to reconnect to the network.
Update Jan 16th: Added more details about how to redeem the $20 account credit.
