The era of dueling NFL RedZone channels is over.

Most people watch the NFL RedZone channel hosted by Scott Hanson, but DirecTV has run its own popular Sunday Ticket RedZone channel hosted by Andrew Siciliano for years now. That’s about to change: YouTube chief product officer Neal Mohan tells me that Hanson’s channel will be part of Sunday Ticket when it jumps to the streamer next year, and the DirecTV version is not part of the deal. Hanson: victorious.

Did the Apple/NFL Sunday Ticket deal fall apart over VR?

That’s what this story from The Athletic posits, anyway. Apple reportedly wanted the NFL to let it stream football on “known and unknown” platforms, and AR and VR would be the most obvious unknowns. But the NFL wouldn’t accept such broad language, it seems.

The simpler story here is that Apple is a control freak of an organization, and so is the NFL. In this case, I’m betting YouTube was happy to give the NFL exactly the cable-style deal it wanted — and write a really big check.

The NFL wanted Apple to take Sunday Ticket into the streaming world. What happened?
