Fitbit’s WEAR-ME study is exploring whether wearables can monitor metabolic health.

Fitbit is working with Quest Diagnostics to see whether metrics like heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep cycles, and stress can be used to detect early signs of metabolic deterioration — a leading cause of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes.

To do that, WEAR-ME study participants will need their blood drawn so Fitbit can draw correlations and develop algorithms for assessing metabolic health. Not a typical step for these kinds of studies! This could be very cool, or perhaps end up as vaporware, but you can find more information here.

Fitbit and Pixel Watch users can get a free SoulCycle class.

After dropping a not-so-subtle teaser last week, Google has announced that users wearing a Fitbit device or Pixel Watch to a SoulCycle class from January 22nd to 28th will get a complimentary class they can attend with a friend.

Google says users can redeem the offer at any class with the “Soul Surprise presented by Fitbit” theme from January 29th to February 4th.

Apple’s Watch workaround to avoid an import ban has reportedly been approved.

Word of this comes not from US Customs, but Masimo’s own lawyers in a letter published by 9to5Mac. It says the updated watches “do not contain pulse oximetry functionality,” which is a step further than last month’s report that Apple engineers were working on new algorithms.

It means Apple can continue importing the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 despite the patent infringement dispute — just without blood oxygen reading features enabled.

First look at Garmin Connect’s overhauled interface.

DesFit, a leading voice in the fitness device space on YouTube, has a preview of the new Garmin Connect app and website that’s currently in beta for select users. This major overhaul will hopefully correct one of the main pain points that comes with using Garmin’s information dense devices. Des likes the emphasis on swiping panels, but says the at-a-glance screens will take time to get used to and the website still needs polishing.
