The footage of a Tesla causing an eight-car crash on the Bay Bridge looks bad.

The Intercept got the surveillance footage of the crash that took place over Thanksgiving. In it, you can see the Tesla vehicle changing lanes and then abruptly braking, causing a pileup that injured nine people, including a two-year old child.

Meanwhile, the head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says they’re “working really fast” on their nearly two-year-old investigation into Tesla’s Autopilot crashes.

Elon Musk still annoyed about dad’s old emerald mine.

It’s inconvenient for his origin story! So he tried to suggest the emerald mine was “fake” — only to see his tweet revealed as a blatant lie on Twitter.

FWIW, Snopes was unable to find proof that emeralds paid for Musk’s rise to fame, but it also notes some stories about the mine have been...disappearing. Here’s one dad money quote that’s still on the web: “We had so much money at times we couldn’t even close our safe.”

Rivian narrowly missed its goal to build 25,000 EVs last year.

The California-based company delivered 20,332 vehicles to customers and produced 24,337 electric vehicles in 2022, 10,020 of which were built in the last quarter according to a statement released on Tuesday.

Reuters reports that Rivian shares fell by almost 6 percent following the announcement, with rival EV manufacturer Tesla falling by over 12 percent after also missing its production targets.

Korea fined Tesla $2.2 million for its range advertisements.

The Korea Fair Trade Commission dinged the automaker after taking issue with Tesla’s wording on how far its cars can drive on a charge — apparently, the regulator wanted the company to be clearer that electric vehicles’ range takes a significant hit in the cold, according to Electrek.

The company has now added a disclaimer to its site saying “displayed drivable distance may vary depending on external factors such as speed, weather conditions, and road conditions.”

What is Musk doing to Tesla? Maybe he’ll explain on March 1st.

Tesla just announced it’ll livestream its investor day on March 1st, 2023, “with the option for some of our institutional and retail investors to attend in person”.

I imagine those investors will have some very pointed questions for him — like how it feels to become the first person to ever lose $200 billion? More on Tesla’s challenges in the Twitter era from my colleague Andy:
