I really appreciate the AI’s candidness about a 3-in-1 chair in this summary.

While I was online shopping today, I came across Amazon’s AI-generated review summaries, and I started clicking a variety of products to see how each summary was different from the last. I stumbled across this convertible sleeper chair, and the review summary did not disappoint.

Out of the 128 reviews on this product, 25 of them stated that the chair is incredibly hard to sleep or sit on, and the AI sure took that to heart in its summarization.

Screenshot of Amazon’s AI review summary reading: Customers like the ease of assembly of the chair. They mention that it’s simple to assemble and easy to turn into a bed. They like the appearance of the product, saying that it looks good and is well made. They also like the value of the item. However, some customers have reported that the chair is hard as hell.

AI isn’t quite ready to be remastering film for 4K.

As with most things in moviemaking there’s a real art to remastering content. When it was announced that James Cameron’s True Lies was getting a proper 4K release in the U.S., folks were hopeful it would share Cameron’s knack for technical artistry.

But according to Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits the new 4K digital release from Lightstorm used 4K scans of the original negatives that were then “optimized” with deep-learning algorithms. And AI made the film look too sharp and weird (as you can see below). A shame, given they had scans of the original negative.

Here’s how Spotify’s AI playlist feature might work.

One user (@robdad_) on TikTok spotted the upcoming feature, which uses AI to generate a playlist based on a prompt, like “get focused at work with instrumental electronica.” Spotify confirmed to TechCrunch that it’s testing the tool.

Google is reportedly working on an AI assistant for Pixels, called “Pixie.”

The Pixel-exclusive AI assistant will use the information on a user’s phone, such as data from Maps and Gmail, to become a more “personalized” version of Google Assistant, according to a report from The Information. The feature could reportedly launch with the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro next year.

Worldcoin is bringing its eyeball-scanning tech to Reddit, Discord, and... Minecraft?

The Sam Altman-backed crypto project announced the rollout of World ID 2.0, which can apparently use your eyeball scan to verify your identity when signing into an account or applying for online verification status. Worldcoin says the update should make it “easier to distinguish between bots and verified humans online.”

Instagram now lets you make AI-generated backdrops for your Stories.

It’s a fun tool, though the backgrounds I’ve tested definitely have an “AI art” vibe to them.

Google Cloud debuts its latest generative AI model.

Unveiled today alongside the API for Google’s Gemini AI model, Google says its Imagen 2 text-to-image generator delivers “significantly improved image quality” compared to its predecessor. This includes rendering accurate text (instead of a jumbled mess) and logos that can be overlayed onto products and surfaces.

That should bring it more in line with AI products from rivals like Adobe’s Firefly and Bing’s DALL-E integration, which have also seen similar updates in recent months.

If you specify what text you want to see generated within your prompts, Imagen 2 should follow those instructions to the literal letter.

People think ChatGPT is getting lazier.

Even large language model-powered chatbots get tired, it seems. Several users said that ChatGPT often refuses to execute tasks that involve a lot of data and took to OpenAI’s community forums and Threads to complain.

OpenAI acknowledged the issue on December 7, saying it hadn’t updated GPT-4 since November 11th. However, users said ChatGPT continues to reject certain jobs, even on paid accounts.

The Verge reached out to OpenAI for more information.
