Today on The Vergecast: When you see the swaggy Pope, it’s all over.

Did Pope Drip fool you, too? What does it mean that it worked so well? What will the aliens think when they find the Balenciaga bishop among the remains of our civilization? There’s a lot to talk about this week.

Also, we get into whether Apple’s going to launch an AR headset at WWDC — and whether it should.

“Trusted testers” have access to Docs and Gmail’s new AI tools.

Earlier this month Google announced a slate of generative AI features for its Workspace suite, and now some members of the public are getting access to a few of them. Quality never goes out of style. But tact might.

Last week, Levi’s revealed it would be supplementing human fashion models with AI-generated ones to ‘sustainably diversify’ its online shopping platforms. Unsurprisingly, people took issue with that.

The denim company responded by blaming industry standards for its model limitations on photoshoots and now claims it “did not see this pilot as a means to advance diversity.” It went on to claim, “we are not scaling back our plans for live photo shoots, the use of live models, or our commitment to working with diverse models.”

UK rejects idea of dedicated AI regulator.

The UK government has outlined its plans to regulate AI by ... not regulating AI. Well, no, that’s unfair. The government says it’s up to existing regulators to ensure AI doesn’t cause harms in fields like health, finance, etc.

Given the speed with which AI is developing, it’s an understandable reaction to avoid new legislation that would become swiftly out-of-date. But with others calling for a pause in the AI arms race, is more intervention required?
