AI-generated video is still in its “demonic phase.”

Yes, this AI clip of Will Smith eating spaghetti is monstrous, but remember when AI-generated images looked as bad? That was only a year or two ago. Imagine how quickly things will improve.

For more examples, check out “Scarlett Johansson eating spaghetti” and “Joe Rogan fighting a bear.” There’s an enjoyably dreamlike quality to these clips. At one point in the latter Joe Rogan turns into a bear and then fights himself.

It’s so hard to be worried about AI when the shit is so funny.

Another hurdle for AI image generators: unicycles

Journalist Luke Bailey makes the point on Twitter with some fantastic images. (And our own try below.)

As with AI hands, this is likely an artifact of how these systems learn to recreate surfaces, not underlying structures, which makes objects with specific compositions (hands, unicycles) a challenge.

Sadly, wonky unicycles are not a useful tell when it comes to spotting AI fakes like the Pope in a puffy jacket. Not, of course, unless we demand all public figures conduct interviews on unicycles to prove the footage is real...

An AI generated image of the pope riding a badly rendered unicycle.
Prompt: “Pope Francis riding a unicycle.” Generated with Midjourney.

Apple quietly acquired a startup that specializes in AI video compression.

While Apple may not be making any monumental jumps into AI just yet, the company acquired a startup last month that leverages machine learning technology to compress and decompress videos, as first spotted by TechCrunch.

The startup, called WaveOne, announced the sale to Apple on LinkedIn, with its former vice president of sales stating that Apple saw the company’s potential and “took the opportunity to add it to their technology portfolio.”

Here I am on the Apple News In Conversation podcast talking about AI.

Did I have to apologize to host Shumita Basu for answering every question with a question about the nature of human emotions? I did. But I think that might be the entire point!
