Some new details about Humane and its Ai Pin.

Janko Roettgers (who has written for The Verge) wrote in his latest newsletter that an FCC filing indicates “Humane is looking to act as an MVNO,” which could explain how the Ai Pin can be used for phone calls. The filing also says that the company’s largest shareholder is OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Humane was set to reveal more about the Ai Pin on the same day as this weekend’s eclipse, but it now plans to share more on November 9th.

How to make a bad first impression.

TechCrunch says that Yepic AI, a UK startup that says it won’t make deepfakes without consent from the person being faked deeply, sent one of TechCrunch’s reporters a pitch that included... two nonconsensual deepfake videos of that very reporter.

When asked, the company’s chief executive reportedly said neither he nor his team made the video — “Our PR team have confirmed the video was created specifically for the journalist to generate awareness of the incredible technology Yepic has created.”

The US Space Force is the latest organization to stop employees from using generative AI tools.

The Sept. 29 memorandum, addressed to the Guardian Workforce, the term for Space Force members, pauses the use of any government data on web-based generative AI tools, which can create text, images or other media from simple prompts. The memo says they “are not authorized” for use on government systems unless specifically approved.

Many other organizations, from Apple to the House of Representatives, have restricted employee use of certain generative AI tools.

Nod.ai will let companies run AI models specifically tuned to AMD’s chips.

AMD has been trying to increase its market share against Nvidia, currently the de facto leader in AI chips. Most large language models run on Nvidia’s H100 GPUs which are now in high demand.

AMD CEO Lisa Su spoke with The Verge’s Nilay Patel during the Code Conference and said the company sees a lot of opportunity in providing chips that can run AI models to smaller companies that may not have direct access to Nvidia’s GPUs.

PC industry looks to generative AI for sales boost.

PC shipments are still down, but the decline has slowed with analysts like IDC’s Linn Huang expressing optimism about more expensive “AI PCs” on the horizon:

“Generative AI could be a watershed moment for the PC industry. While use cases have yet to be fully articulated, interest in the category is already strong.

That’s good news for Microsoft and Intel with Windows 12 and Meteor Lake / Arrow Lake just around the corner.
